Oak Terrace Residence
Enhancements to optimize daylight and indoor-outdoor connections
Location
Needham, MA
With a quest to “bring the outdoors in,” clients with a growing family asked us to re-imagine some of the key spaces in their home.
The owners of a traditional home in the Boston suburbs have made incremental additions and renovations over time, in parallel with the growth of their young family. The most recent of these was inspired in part by the desire to make better connections from the interiors to the outdoors, and so a screen porch was placed adjacent to the breakfast area of the kitchen. An operable wall of glass panels fully connects the kitchen to the sitting area of the porch when in the open position, and allows for a visual connection when closed. The generously furnished porch can be used year-round by swapping screen panels for glass, and firing up the fireplace and ceiling-mounted heating panels.
Above the screen porch, a new bedroom was designed around corner windows at a built-in desk, transforming the quality of indoor light and reinforcing the theme of bringing the outdoors in.
